My favorite recording of this is Ray Charles and Betty Carter, and I love the way the vocal lines interrupt each other, much as people will do in conversation. It makes it most obvious that the two singers are not really listening to each other. The female is conflicted, and the male very convincing. The lyrics are amazing. I’ve always wanted to sing this song with somebody and although he’s not been a singer, Bob is very musical and has a beautiful voice. He used to sing to me on the phone long distance when we were courting. So I asked him to sing this one with me. Bob wrote a really simple intro that comes again in the middle and at the end. Very simple.
