I used to play this one every Christmas season in my piano lessons as a youth, but back then my teacher never assigned the Verse of the song. Ella Fitzgerald very often sings the verse in her recordings of classic songs, and I’ve always loved that. I have Lou Rawls singing a particularly swinging version of this Verse and Chorus. It was Bob’s idea to make this one sound like Santa Claus is Coming to New Orleans, and it was a lot of fun to do the Verse in a kind of 2nd line style and then have the Chorus of the song in a New Orleans Rhumba. There are sleigh bells replacing what might typically be a cow bell pattern on this track!
